Who am I?

My name is Dakota Sinder.

Writer, Emerging Historian, and Cultural Curator

I am Indonesian and American. But, if you really drill down, there’s a bit of Chinese, Russian, Hungarian, and more in my blood.

I’ve been told that my family has roots around the world. I am both Jewish & Muslim. Yes, that’s correct. I was raised with both faiths and cultures.

I was born between Millennials and Gen Z in Berkeley, CA. When I was two, I moved to Jakarta where I lived until I graduated high school.

I then moved to Washington, DC for college.

After graduating, I moved to New York to work in the sports and entertainment industry.

After five years working in different parts of the industry, I pivoted. At the beginning of 2024, I set out to write a book. Yes, it was as nebulous as that, “a book.” I went through over thirty different iterations and narrowed it to a specific story—to the story I wanted to tell.

The Most Gentle People is a mixed-race coming-of-age story about growing up Indonesian and Indonesia growing up, which illustrates that the struggle to understand ourselves is inseparable from the historical forces that surround us.

In the Fall of 2025, as I pitch The Most Gentle People, I am also relaunching my newsletter. It has now moved to Substack under the title Indo Nesos. Outside of writing books and my newsletter, I contribute to other outlets as well (the details of which are currently confidential—more information to be shared soon). Lastly, I also manage an Instagram account that covers Indonesian culture, sometimes re-sharing my writing there as well.
